Lot 1564
1873 Nickel Three Cents. Closed 3. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. Spot-free gem. Totally white. Lustrous, mint-sparkling Proof surfaces put on a show with their gleaming originality and nickel-bright iridescence, the overall appearance greatly reinforced by cartwheel luster. Regarding this date, mintage was very low in the early years of the series. This is why the dates most often seen in auctions are those made from 1878 to 1889, when production increased. Only 1,100 Proofs were struck in 1873, about half to one-third the number of later issues. Pop 22; 1 in 65 Star; 15 in 66.
Estimated Value $900 - 1,000.

Lot 1565
1874 Nickel Three Cents. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. Untoned gem. Blazing mirror freshness on satiny nickel bright surfaces. A touch of weakness is sometimes seen at Liberty's hair on the later Proofs, but here, because this piece was struck early in the series, it is likely that the dies were spaced with the exact precision to impart very strong metal flow in the central areas. A lovely cameo Gem Proof. Pop 19; 5 better.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,250.

Lot 1566
1886 Nickel Three Cents. NGC graded Proof 65. 4,290 proofs struck. Mostly untoned. Blazing mirrors with somewhat satiny leanings on light champagne gold surfaces. A touch of weakness is seen at leaves and ribbon ends on the reverse, possibly the result of extensive polishing of the die; however, the main devices as well as the central Roman III are all crystal clear and sharp on this well made, well preserved Gem Proof.
Estimated Value $575 - 625.
